A look at Sioux opponents

Northwestern State will have played two games before the Demons take on UND a week from Saturday in Natchitoches, La.

Houston, a Conference USA program, beat Northwestern 55-7 last Saturday. Northwestern received $300,000 for the game.

Northwestern plays at Grambling this Saturday and at Baylor a week after the UND game. That's a pretty demanding schedule for a first-year coach to inherit. Bradley Dale Peveto, a former LSU assistant, took over the Northwestern program earlier this year.

In its game at Houston, 16 transfers were on the Northwestern State travel squad.

One interesting note is that Northwestern played a true freshman - Paul Harris - at quarterback during its game at Houston. Although he didn't start, Harris is expected to play again this week against Grambling. A story on the Northwestern quarterback can be found here: http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20090910/SPORTS/909100304/1001

A couple of other notes from upcoming UND opponents:

  • Central Arkansas, ranked No. 13 in this week's FCS Top 25 poll, lost 25-20 at Hawaii last week.
  • Cal Poly, ranked No. 12, opens the season Saturday against Sacramento State before hitting the road for FBS games at Ohio and San Jose State. Cal Poly will be at UND on Oct. 31.
  • UC Davis lost 52-0 at Fresno State last Saturday. UND will be at UC Davis on Nov. 14 and the Sioux will open the 2011 season at Fresno.
  • Hofstra beat Stony Brook 17-10, the winning points coming when a Hofstra offensive lineman fell on a fumble in the Stony Brook end zone. Stony Brook, where Twins' closer Joe Nathan is a member of the school's athletic department hall of fame, will be UND's opponent in the Potato Bowl on Oct. 10.

  1. what does natchitoches mean?
    and what does nacogdoches mean?

  2. I think “Natchitoches” is a cajun term that means “we’re a lean, mean football team.”

  3. na-chito-ches refers to the state of many a game board where playing pieces are lost and cheetos are used as substitute pieces.

  4. Actually, it means nachos, nachos, nachos!

  5. how bout the UND NACHO’S!

thats got a good ring to it. pay homage to the pototoe industry.

  6. What kind of statistics does UND need to have in a losing effort for the game to be considered a victory like the TTU game was? Is the standard different for FCS teams?

Also, is it simply a matter of keeping it within 3 scores or does the offense always have to get 200 yds or so?

Thanks in advance, we are just curious.

  7. Good Question. UND is a newcomer to FCS. Suppose it’s about spin, which really doesn’t mean much — especially at this stage of the season. Texas Tech is expected by some to finished 3rd or 4th in the Big 12 South. Not the team they were last year. At least that’s the way it seems now. An established FCS power would be expected to be competitive with a weaker FBS team. Now, if UND drops its game against the University of Sioux Falls, (NAIA powerhouse moving to D2)or narrowly wins, then USF fans would really have something to crow about. That ain’t gonna to happen. But then again, there’s that expression, “Any given Sunday.”
What I don’t understand is what’s in it for a FBS school to play a FCS school? They’re out $300-$600K and risk a potential embarassment. Could anyone explain that to me?

  8. And established FCS power house would be expected to be competitive with any FBS team.

I think that changes by the time you start looking at NAIA teams. They are too far down on the talent food chain. Anything but a huge win against the defending national NAIA champions should be considered a moral loss just as the loss at TTU was considered by some to be a moral victory.

You may remember all the crowing a few years back when it was said by many UND fans that a good D2 is competitive with FCS. Im wondering if UND fans feel differently now. After all, not counting USD, UND lost all its FCS games except 1. On the other hand they won all the D2 or lower division games. Top to bottom is was a very weak schedule.

  9. Perhaps all the NDSU fans can discuss here how good ole Joe Chapman decides that he can spend $600,000 more on a house than allowed, lie about it, and be insubordinate to the ND Board of Higher Ed and legislature. Just continuing his previous pattern of spending and cover up.

  10. Or maybe the State of ND should quit throwing $$ into the drain that is the UND Nickname. Talk about a waste there… financially and mentally.

  11. Thank God UND did not have to play that FB powerhouse ISU on the road in their first game and got cupcake TT instead. Iowa 35 ISU 3.

Its a bitter loss. It was a magnificent BISON performance.

  13. you’re bithcin about chapman’s house paid with private funds, when und alumni money is in standing rock getting tribal election secretary’s fired?

priorities bitches. *(britney’s in town tonite)*

  14. So how many yards would Texas Tech throw for on the Bison D? Do you think they’d keep it under a grand? How many points? 70? 80?

  15. sue still suck, but wait the sue will dominate the rest of the way, they are leaders in transition, change ur %^%$%^ name and move on. wish we could have played u in the transition period and now. moral victories are for u sue fans. yes tough start for us bison, but would be a bison fan any day rather than a sue booster, even though the sue have many titles and big time wins. tell it like it is tell it like it is bring it on. sue suck cant say it enough sounds great doesent it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Bison fans….how are things?

  17. All my bison buddies have been talking up what a great year the bison will have this year. They guaranteed that there would be a playoff game in Fargodome. Wanted to make sure I got tickets. When do the playoff tickets in the Fargodome go on sale?

  18. Who will give up more yardage and points against UNI?

  19. 620 things r great. how r things for the sue. everthing sue football is vanilla, wouldnt u agree. fill the tin shed, pack the tin shed.

  20. Under the new rules of scoring implemented for the first time this year by UND, NDSU is now 2-0 with 2 moral victories under their belt. UND is 1-0. What a season. I predict UND goes undefeated. NDSU will actually win some games. Are those wins still victories under the new rules of scoring? Thanks in advance for the answer.
