Cal Poly at UND

We're about 10 minutes from kickoff. Crowd is slowly filtering in, which is saying there won't be a lot of fans here today. Student section is virtually empty. Guess students care about hockey only, and that's if hockey is winning.

Sioux will play without cornerback Delano Saporu today. He's likely done for the season.

First quarter

9:55 remaining, Chris Pinto 38 field goal, Cal Poly 3, UND 0.

Sioux pick up first down, then punt. A 60-yard pass from Tony Smith to Dominique Johnson sets up the field goal.

5:20 remaining, Jon Hall 10 pass from Smith, Pinto kick, Cal Poly 10, UND 0
Asa Jackson's 34-yard punt return up the middle sets up Cal Poly with a first down at the Sioux 18. Cal Poly scores on third-and-goal from the 10.

Cal Poly misses 40-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds to go after UND's Jake Landry fumbles at Sioux 37

Second quarter

Attendance today looks to be around 7,000. The figure will be available early in the third quarter

12:35 remaining, Jake Landry 28 run, Brandon Hellevang kick, Cal Poly 10, UND 7
Landry's running fuels 6-play, 76-yard drive. He makes 5 Cal Poly defenders miss on his TD run.

10:47 remaining, Hall 30 pass from Smith, Pinto kick, Cal Poly 17, UND 7
Mustangs come right back and score. They go 60 yards in four plays.

0:40 remaining, Ryan Konrath 8 pass from Brent Goska, Hellevang kick.
Sioux capitalize on Cal Poly fumble and drive 77 yards in 9 plays. Goska rolls right on TD play, faking a run, and hits Konrath in the end zone

A few halftime statistics:

Cal Poly 186 total yards, UND 171. Cal Poly 17 first downs, UND 14. Cal Poly 42 rushing yards,  UND 100. Landry 72 rushing yards and 5-for-9 passing for 72 yards.

Third quarter

8:43 remaining, Mitch Sutton 10 run, Hellevang kick, UND 21, Cal Poly 17
UND goes 91 yards in 8 plays to take the lead. It's UND's most impressive offensive drive in weeks. Landry hits Bamba for 30 yards.

Attendance today: 6,711, the smallest regular-season crowd in Alerus history.

End of three, Sioux 21, Cal Poly 17. Sioux are driving. They have a third-and-1 at the Cal Poly 29.

Fourth quarter

Hellevang 47 field goal, 13:24 remaining, UND 24, Cal Poly 17

9:27 remaining, UND leads 24-17. Sioux just forced Cal Poly to punt and have the ball at their 20.

Sutton 5 run, Hellevang kick, 3:38 remaining.
Sioux drive 79 yards in 5:49. Running game is as good as it's been all season

Joel Schwenzfeier picks off Cal Poly pass at Mustang 44.

Curtis Dublanko picks off Tony Smith and returns it 16 yards to the CP 38.

Sioux win 31-17, perhaps their biggest as a Division I FCS program

  1. Wayne, what’s the attendance this afternoon?

  2. Students aren’t the only group that treats UND football as secondary. The Herald does too. The football coverage is pathetic compared to hockey coverage.

  3. They are going to introduce everybody at the half.

I think we are looking good. We are keeping pace with the best team that has ever played in Grand Forks! This is history in the making! Right now its just a 2 possession game. Remember when it ended TT was a 4 possession game! This one is for the record books. Sioux-per bowl!!!

  4. Great game. Congratulations to Coach Mussman and the entire team. A new era for Fighting Sioux Football is ON!!!

  5. Congrats to the team and coaching staff.

  6. This win is huge. It negates the Sioux Falls game for sure.

    CONGRATS SIOUX!

  7. Congratulations Sioux! Nice FB game. As for the people of GF and the UND students, as an alum I am totally ashamed of you! These kids deserve a better turnout than 6700 people! On national TV and there are 6000 empty seats! There is nothing in GF that is better than UND sports and if you do not appreciate it and support it who will? UND alums around the country are far more loyal than you local bumpkins, yeah BUMPKINS. I am totally ashamed of the people of GF and the area. The game starts at 4, is over by 7 and you cannot get off your fat butt and go support these kids against a ranked team that came within an eyelash of upsetting Wisconsin last year? If you want to be a D1 city then you better start showing it! Remember, 98% of the US population has no idea what hockey is. Totally a great performance by the team and a crap performance by the students and local population.

  8. Don’t sugarcoat it, Ole.

  9. Ole, remember that 98% of the world doesn’t know what American football is either. The bottom line is, this is hockey town USA and if it’s important here, it’s important. I agree with your point about the embarrassing lack of public support for Sioux football, but there’s no need to denigrate another sport to make it.

  10. Right. Shame on Ole. Leave those classy UND hockey fans alone!

  11. Why is it that hockey fans are always super sensitive? You even dare state the fact that in the grand scheme of things hockey is not that big of deal in the US and then they get all super defensive about things. Also, hockey fans are usually the ones who never support any other sports. I’ve see it more often than not around here, as if somehow supporting another UND team would do a disservice to supporting the hockey team- thats bumpkin thinking in my book. Go Sioux!

  12. Bumpkins. That’s it!!!! That could be the new mascot.

  13. Wow!!! The sioux-per shot glasses were kept full after the sioux-per win at UNDs suiper-bowl!!! We whopped and hollered long into the night clebrating the biggest win in UND history against the best team that has ever played in the Alerus in front of at least 24 million on TV and 6,000 paid attendance!!! The twelvth man indeed. When that place gets that full its awesome. Way better than anyting else in North Dakota and way better than a win over a worthless Gopher team or Montana or something. We are #1. UND Siouxper-team!!! This is the best team in UND history!!!!! Muss is a genius. The Sioux Falls game no longer exists on the record and we will not play them again. I cant wait until next saturday when we resume NAIA play and all the challenges that brings to the team. Hope to see you all out there.

Put the screws to some kids coach, lets keep the jaugurgenaught rolling!!!

  14. Thanks for the kudos Big fan!! Good job Sioux!!

  15. No JBB, Coach Muss said you “could” put the screws to recruits like other schools do who want to lock up early commitments. He chooses not to because he knows they are going to change their minds 2-3 times.

Then come February people in Fargo are going to wonder why some of the early commits didn’t sign. Pointless.

  16. Hockey fans aren’t the problem. UND’s lack of promotion of sports besides hockey is the problem.

  17. If they would have built the Alerus where Memorial currently sits, attendance would never be an issue for UND football.

  18. Maybe only 6,700, but the crowd was quite loud and those in attendence saw a very good game. I was very impressed by the enthusiasm of the players, they knew they haven’t played up to expectations the past two weeks and were going to show people that they are a better team than they have showed. It will be very interesting to see how the next three games turn out and how the team plays.

By the way has anyone looked at the 2010 schedule. A strong Great West Conference plus Idaho, Northern Illinois and Montana. Looks like a lot of fun. Go SIOUX

  19. *yawn* did i miss something? is cal poly a MAC school or BIG TEN school? So you caught an average FCS team on a down weekend, but you also caught an average NAIA team too 2 weeks ago and how’d that work out for you.
    still an embarassing season.

  20. So Cal Poly is an average team. They were ranked 16 nationally. Oh by the way they beat SDSU which is number 1 in the missouri Valley Conference. That is the same SDSU team that handled the Bison rather easily. To say Cal Poly is average doesn’t say much about the quality of NDSU. I guess you Bison fans have already figured out that NDSU is pretty bad this year. NDSU did beat Wagner Tech and a winless Western Illinois (barely) though. Tough year to be Bison fan.

  21. Put the screws to a few of those kids and we could get them to come our way. Thats what he said john. I can understand your need to try and rewrite this bit of history too, but it just wont work. Remember he was bragging about his early commit at the time but trying to make the point its not a good idea to get early commits like some other schools.

  22. Reduced to slandering UND coaches, eh JBB?

Why not tell it like it played out on the radio: Mussman wad told “you must feel good” about news of an early commit and asked about others. He responded they had offers out and probably could get other verbals “if we put the screws to them” but added they let student-athlete decisions “play out” in time because early verbals are pointless. Is the truth so hard?

  23. I don’t care what the context was of what he said. The fact is he used the words “put the screws to them” which is pretty darn funny. As far as Cal Poly goes, am I the only fan who thinks it would’ve been better for us not to beat Cal Poly? Muzz sucks, and catching a good team on a terrible day does nothing to cover up the loss to Sioux Falls for me. Let the season be what it has been, partly crappy with a chance of sucky.

  24. Dear Mr. Wayne,
Please turn off the comments…it’s clearly just an opportunity for bison losers (APPARENTLY with small penises) to come here, make a stupid post, then pleasure themselves at the expense of your blog.
(Here’s some hand sanitizer if you need some…) and I say SHUT IT DOWN! Don’t give little pussies like jbb and lakes a forum to spit their poison anonymously…

    LOVE,
lakes- gee my dick is small – bison YEAH MOFO’S!!!

  25. I agree with a previous poster. UND Athletic Department needs to do some SERIOUS upgrading to its marketing efforts. A D1 program deserve a professional marketing push.

  26. Mussman said if we put the screws to a few kid we could get them to come our way. He needs to think about what he is saying.

  27. Mussman has no class. He said what he said. He was busy trying to put NDSU down and claims he could put the screws to some kids and get them to come “our” way. He owes NDSU, his recruits, his potential recruits and the State an apology for a statement that might reveal exactly how he operates.

  28. yea, muss is a total idiot, and does he actually walk around campus with his chest puffed out thinking he will make a dent into NDSU? if so, he’s a bigger idiot than UND fans in general *which is hard to do in itself*
seriously the guy on the recruiting trail thinks he can “put screws to a kid”, tell them “und is the best engineering school in the area”- ask Nick Powell-Calhoun @ NDSU about that, and then he tells josh horner “we’ll be playing Hawaii & have a 30,000 outdoor stadium”

should I stop? psh, and stay classy grand forks with the personal comments, it just shows that the truth hurts, sorry!!

  29. Hey Big, thanks for the regurgitation of Bisonville urban legends. Always fun to see how far removed from reality nutjobs can get. Keep the humor coming….

  30. Do listen to the radio in this town or pick up a paper or go to Fighting Sioux dot com– if anything they over market in this area. I hear and see so many commercials on radio tv, I’m getting a little tired of it.

They do just about everything except hold someones hand to get people to go to the games

in fact,I often wonder how much of the budget is spent on all this marketing, marketing, marketing- Marketing isn’t really required to get me excited about Sioux sports, I already am, but I definitely notice it, and I know I haven’t had to look for it.

  31. Mussman never “recruited” Horner, Lennon was the coach. Recruited is used loosely since Horner never was invited for an official visit nor offered a scholarship.

  32. it wasnt horner, it was 2 other recruits that und lost out on, but the powell comment is correct.

  33. UND is the best engineering school in the area.

  34. If what these guys are saying is true Muzz needs to apologize to NDSU. Its worse to accuse someone else, without presenting any evidence at all, of “putting the screws to some kids” than it is to admit that “putting the screws to some kids” is a normal practice at UND.
