Hats off to Mayville
The NCAA Tournament suddenly got a lot more interesting around these parts when Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson led his Panthers over No. 1 Kansas on Saturday. CBS said Jacobson was the pride of Maysville, N.D.
Well, we all know he's from Mayville.
A longtime Herald reader, however, has passed on an interesting tibit about another Mayville native who became a successful college coach.
In 1997, Kansas also was the team to beat in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks were No. 1 in the country, too. But the Jayhawks lost to Arizona in the Sweet Sixteen.
The 1997 Arizona team was coached by Lute Olson, another Mayville native. Olson and Arizona went on to win the 1997 NCAA title.
So, two Mayville natives now have been responsible for taking down Kansas teams that were ranked No. 1 and the favorite to win it all.
Not bad for a town of about 2,000.
